I remember hearing one lecture… by P.J. O’Rourke where he was addressing a bunch of libertarians. [He] said that… I’m paraphrasing… “What we all have in common is that everyone in this room does not know what’s best for everyone else. That’s all we have in common.” And my whole take on libertarianism – I don’t go with pragmatic arguments at all. The arguments that our whole world would function better, I don’t go for the arguments that the free market is magic and if we left it alone, everyone would be better and happier off. I always go to kind of a pure ideological, moral point of view. … Really, the point of view on libertarianism for me is simply that each person has to make those decisions [on what’s best for them] for themselves, and I don’t know what’s best for other people. … And I don’t think there is anything you could do that is more insulting, [no matter how well-meaning], than acting like you know what’s best for someone else. …
