What is the FMMA?

In my most recent video blog for the Free Market Medical Association, I describe what the organization is… and what it is not. Read the transcript here:

Hello, Dr. Keith Smith with you on behalf of the Free Market Medical Association. Thank you for joining us in this video blog series. We hope to see all of you next month at our meeting, the details for which can be found at MarketMedicine.org. Hope to see you there.

I’d like to talk today a little bit about what the Free Market Medical Association is not. It is not a political organization. We do not have a lobbyist at all. Certainly not one who goes to Washington to curry favors with the legislators, generally whose pockets are lined by the big corporate interests.

We promote the free market. No economic invention of man has resulted in a better, more fair allocation of resources than the free market. And this is particularly important in healthcare. Healthcare, after all, is far too important to trust to the government – any government – which always seems to get everything wrong.

For those of you who might think that the Free Market Medical Association is some kind of right-wing or partisan organization, I’d encourage you to think again. It is no such thing.

People of all political stripes were at our meeting last year and all felt welcome. I’ve been approached by many people who told me they could not be more philosophically opposed to what I say, but they also cannot argue with cheaper and better.

Indeed, the application of these free market medical principles to healthcare have caused many to reevaluate the way they look at capitalism and the free market in general.

I would like to encourage any and all of you watching this to attend. It is a wonderful conference. There is wonderful networking and conversations that happen in every corner of the room. It was a very exciting time last year and I would like to encourage any and all of you to attend this year.

Thank you for joining us and we hope to see folks of all political stripes at our meeting this year. We’ll see you soon.
